Which Arirang is the original?
Arirang is not one fixed song with one universally accepted original recording. UNESCO describes roughly 60 versions and about 3,600 variations. Regional communities changed melodies and lyrics over generations.
The melody most foreigners know is one version
The familiar refrain — Arirang, arirang, arariyo — appears across versions, but melodies and verses differ.
Jeongseon Arirang, Miryang Arirang and Jindo Arirang are among the best-known regional forms.
They are not modern remixes of one studio master. They grew through oral transmission in different places.
People kept changing the song
Arirang was passed from singer to singer rather than protected as a single fixed score.
New verses could be added. Local speech and local melodies entered the song. Themes ranged from separation and longing to everyday life, joy and complaint.
UNESCO treats that capacity for improvisation and variation as part of the tradition itself.

The word “Arirang” has no single proven translation
Online explanations often present one neat etymology: a mountain pass, a beloved person, sorrow or another literal meaning.
No single explanation is universally established.
English articles should therefore avoid writing “Arirang literally means...” unless they are clearly presenting one theory among several.
It became a national symbol without becoming the national anthem
Korea's official national anthem is Aegukga.
Arirang is often called an unofficial national song because it has been sung at public events, international gatherings and moments when Koreans wanted a shared cultural symbol.
Its national reach coexists with strong regional identities.
BTS used an old name without turning the album into a folk-song remake
The 2026 BTS album ARIRANG used the name during the group's full return after military service.
The album and its Gwanghwamun presentation placed Korean cultural references around a global pop release.
The album does not replace the traditional song. It adds another contemporary use of a name that has been repeatedly reinterpreted for generations.
Variation is part of the tradition
A tradition does not stop being traditional because a new arrangement appears.
Arirang has moved through folk performance, orchestras, television, films and pop stages.
