Lee Chang-dong’s Possible Love follows two married couples living under very different economic conditions. Ho-seok is a laid-off welder married to Mi-ok. Ye-ji is a documentary filmmaker married to businessman Sang-woo. When Ye-ji begins filming working-class lives and becomes close to Mi-ok, friendship, money and authorship enter the same relationship.
The film does not argue that wealthy people cannot care sincerely about someone poorer. It asks a more specific question: what happens when one woman’s continuing hardship becomes material for another woman’s film?
Possible Love won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the 2026 Venice Film Festival. It opens in select theaters on October 23 and arrives on Netflix on November 6.
Ho-seok has lost his routine and social position
Sul Kyung-gu’s Ho-seok has been unemployed for two years. He has lost income, but his condition is not presented as a financial problem alone. He avoids people, withdraws from his family and struggles to enter another stage of life.
For someone who has spent years in one workplace, dismissal can remove several things at once: daily structure, colleagues, professional identity and a familiar role inside the family.
Korean expressions such as myeonmok-i eopda, meaning that a person feels unable to face others, often combine private disappointment with social shame. Ho-seok appears unable to explain who he is after the job that once defined his place has disappeared.
The film is not evidence that every unemployed Korean man responds in the same way. It uses one character to examine how job loss can affect marriage, dignity and a person’s willingness to remain visible to others.
Ye-ji can choose how Mi-ok appears on screen
Cho Yeo-jeong’s Ye-ji is interested in labor and working people. Her concern does not appear automatically false, and the film does not need to turn her into a villain.
She still holds practical authority. Ye-ji can decide when to film, which scenes to use and when the project is finished. Mi-ok continues living the financial and marital reality after the camera has been turned off.
Their friendship may be genuine. Their choices are not equal. That difference gives the documentary project its tension.
This is not another version of Parasite
Parasite made class visible through a semi-basement apartment, a hilltop house, stairs, rain and smell. The couples in Possible Love can sit at the same table and speak to each other as friends.
The inequality appears through smaller decisions. One person asks questions while another explains her finances. One person can turn the meeting into a finished film. One returns to a comfortable home while the other remains inside the life that was recorded.
Lee does not offer an easy friendship that solves the difference. He also avoids reducing every gesture of concern to hypocrisy.
Mi-ok and Ye-ji do not state every feeling directly
Gratitude, envy, affection and embarrassment can exist in the same exchange. The two women notice each other’s clothes, homes, husbands and freedom, but their most uncomfortable feelings do not always arrive as direct accusations.
In Korean conversation, a refusal may come before acceptance, and anger may be softened into a joke. People often protect their own dignity while also avoiding open embarrassment for the other person.
That does not define every Korean relationship. It does help explain why the film’s pauses and restrained exchanges carry as much weight as its explicit arguments.
What should wait until November 6
Festival reports and Netflix’s synopsis establish the characters and class conflict. They are not enough to settle the ending or every motivation. Those points should be reviewed after the streaming release.
The supported conclusion is narrower: Mi-ok and Ye-ji may care about each other, but affection does not give them the same income, security or authority over the image being created.
