Why K-Pop Project Groups Expire: Contracts, Home Agencies and What Happens Next

Last verified: September 23, 2026

ZEROBASEONE became successful with an expiration date already written into the project.

That sounds strange if you assume every survival-show group is built like a normal agency group. Many project groups are not.

Quick answer

Project groups can combine trainees from several original agencies for a limited contract. The temporary management company runs the group during that period. When it ends, the original agencies regain control of their artists unless everyone negotiates a new arrangement.

The members may belong to different companies

A normal idol group is often assembled inside one agency.

A survival show can pull trainees from several companies. The final lineup becomes one public group, but the members' original agency relationships do not simply disappear.

That is the business problem behind the expiration date.

A project-management company sits in the middle

The show creates the lineup. A separate company may then manage albums, promotions, touring and group schedules for the agreed project period.

The original agencies wait for their artists to return or negotiate what comes next.

Fans see one group. The contract map can contain several companies.

Success does not cancel the original contracts

ZEROBASEONE debuted from Boys Planet under a limited project arrangement.

By early 2026, the original project period was ending. Five members later continued as ZEROBASEONE while four members from YH Entertainment left the group.

That outcome was negotiated. Popularity made continued activity attractive, but it did not erase the agencies behind each member.

Why not extend the whole group?

Every original agency must decide what it wants from its artist.

One may prefer another year of project-group revenue. Another may have a new boy group ready. A member may want acting, solo work or military-service planning.

The more companies involved, the harder it is to make one long-term decision for everyone.

Not every survival-show group is temporary

TWICE came from Sixteen. ENHYPEN came from I-LAND. Neither was launched as the same kind of short-term multi-agency project.

The deciding factor is not whether television chose the members. It is the ownership and contract structure behind the debut.

The fixed end date changes fandom too

Project-group fans know the clock from the beginning.

Every comeback brings questions about extension, return to the original agency and re-debut plans. A normal contract renewal can feel distant. A project-group expiration is part of the fan experience from day one.

After the project, the visibility stays with the member

A trainee can return to an original company with an international fanbase, broadcast experience and a known name.

For the original agency, that future value is one reason not to surrender control permanently.

The temporary group can be both a real group and a career stage inside a longer agency plan.

Popularity and contract length are separate questions

A successful project gives the parties a reason to discuss an extension. It does not automatically produce one.

Each member's company still has its own timetable, business plan and contract interests. One agency may want its artist back just when another side wants the project group to continue.

That tension explains why a popular project group can reach the end of its original contract while fans are still asking for more.
